Reading this category

UPI on credit works, but only on RuPay and only at some merchants.

Linking a RuPay credit card to a UPI app turns every QR code into a credit transaction. Whether that transaction earns rewards is a separate question, and the answer is frequently no.

What decides the order above

  1. Whether UPI spends earn at all

Some cards reward UPI transactions on the same terms as a card swipe, some reward them at a lower rate, and some exclude them. That distinction is the whole category.

  2. Which merchant categories qualify

Eligibility usually depends on the merchant's category and size rather than on the amount you spent, which is why two similar payments can earn differently.

  3. Caps and excluded transaction types

Person-to-person transfers, self-transfers and wallet loads are excluded across the board. Monthly ceilings on UPI earning are common.

What is actually eligible

Only RuPay credit cards can be linked to UPI. Visa and Mastercard credit cards cannot, which means the choice in this category is narrower than the rest of the market.

Once linked, the transactions that work are payments to merchants. What does not work is worth knowing up front:

  • Sending money to another person, which is not permitted on a credit line.
  • Transfers to your own bank accounts.
  • Wallet top-ups and anything else treated as a cash equivalent.
  • In many cases, payments to very small merchants, for the reason below.

Why small QR payments often earn nothing

Rewards are funded by the fee a merchant's bank pays when a card is used. For small merchants below a certain size, UPI transactions carry no such fee, which means there is nothing for the issuer to fund a reward from.

The result is that many cards exclude small-merchant UPI payments from earning, or cap them tightly. This is why the corner shop QR code and the supermarket QR code can behave completely differently on the same card, despite looking identical to you. It is not arbitrary, but it is invisible at the point of payment.

Treat it as a convenience feature first

The strongest case for UPI on credit is acceptance rather than rewards. A great many small merchants in India accept a QR code and do not accept cards at all, and linking a credit card to UPI extends your credit line to all of them.

That is genuinely useful, and it is the reason to have the feature. Rewards on top are a bonus that depends on the card and the merchant. Choosing a card primarily for UPI rewards tends to disappoint; choosing one for reach, with rewards where they happen to apply, does not.

Questions people ask about upi on credit cards

Can I send money to a person using a credit card on UPI?
No. Person-to-person transfers and transfers to your own accounts are not permitted on a UPI-linked credit card. Only merchant payments go through.
Can I link a Visa or Mastercard credit card to UPI?
Not at present. UPI credit linkage is available on RuPay credit cards only, which is why this category is limited to RuPay products.
Why did my QR payment earn no reward?
Most often because the merchant falls into an excluded category or is small enough that the transaction carries no interchange for the issuer to fund a reward from. The monthly cap on UPI earning is the other common cause.
Do UPI credit spends count towards the annual fee waiver?
Usually yes, since they are ordinary merchant spending, but a few issuers treat them separately. Where a fee waiver matters to you, the fee schedule is worth checking rather than assuming.
