Reading this category

At the pump, the surcharge waiver usually matters more than the reward rate.

Fuel has its own charging mechanics. A one per cent surcharge waiver with a sensible monthly ceiling is frequently worth more than a headline reward rate you cannot easily redeem.

What decides the order above

  1. The surcharge waiver and its ceiling

Nearly every fuel benefit in India is a waiver of the one per cent surcharge rather than an earning rate. Its value is capped monthly and usually applies only within a transaction size range, so the ceiling is the number that matters.

  2. Whether fuel earns anything at all

Fuel is one of the most widely excluded categories from ordinary reward earning. We are explicit about which cards genuinely earn on fuel and which merely refund the surcharge.

  3. Network restriction

A co-branded fuel card is tied to one oil company's stations. That makes its value dependent on your route rather than on the card, which is a rare thing in a card comparison and worth stating plainly.

How the surcharge waiver actually works

When you pay for fuel by card, a surcharge of around one per cent is applied on the fuel transaction. A card with a fuel benefit does not prevent that charge; it refunds it, usually as a credit in the same statement cycle.

That refund comes with conditions, and they are consistent enough across the market to be worth knowing as a pattern:

  • A minimum transaction value, below which no waiver applies.
  • A maximum transaction value, above which the waiver applies only to part of the amount.
  • A monthly ceiling on the total waived, which is the real limit on the benefit.
  • In most cases, no reward points on the fuel spend itself alongside the waiver.

Most cards earn nothing on fuel

Fuel sits alongside rent and wallet loads on the standard exclusion list for reward earning. The economics are straightforward: margins on fuel retail are thin and interchange is limited, so there is little for an issuer to fund a reward from.

The exceptions are co-branded fuel cards, where the oil company participates in the economics, and a handful of cards that treat fuel as an accelerated category with a firm cap. Everywhere else, the surcharge waiver is the entire fuel benefit, and a card advertising "fuel benefits" without an earning rate is being accurate rather than evasive.

Co-branded fuel cards trade flexibility for rate

A card tied to one oil company can offer a genuinely strong return at that company's outlets. Whether that is useful depends on something no card comparison can tell you: which station you actually pass on your commute.

If you already refuel at the same brand out of habit, the co-branded card is usually the strongest option in the category. If you fill up wherever is convenient, a card with a good general surcharge waiver will serve you better, because a high rate at stations you never visit is worth nothing.

Questions people ask about fuel cards

Is the fuel surcharge waiver automatic?
Generally yes. It is applied as a credit at statement level rather than at the pump, so the surcharge appears on your account and the waiver follows it, subject to the transaction limits and the monthly ceiling.
Does fuel spend count towards the annual fee waiver?
Frequently not. Fuel is excluded from qualifying spend on many cards for the same reason it is excluded from earning. If you were counting on fuel volume to clear a fee threshold, check the fee schedule first.
Why did I not get the waiver on a small fill-up?
Almost certainly the minimum transaction value. Waivers typically apply within a band, and a small purchase can fall below the lower bound. Very large transactions can also exceed the upper bound, in which case only part of the surcharge is waived.
Do I earn reward points as well as the surcharge waiver?
On most cards, no. The waiver and reward earning on fuel are usually alternatives rather than additions, and a card that offers both will state it explicitly because it is unusual enough to be a selling point.
